The Secretary-General condemns the looting and violence reported around the former United Nations logistics base in El Fasher since December 24, 2021 in part of the former base whose custody was handed over to the local Sudanese authorities on December 21, 2021 The safety of the staff of the former United Nations and African Union peacekeeping mission in Darfur, UNAMID, who remain at the grassroots is currently a major concern. The security of this part of the base that had been invaded and looted had to be ensured by the Sudanese authorities once it had been handed over.

This latest incident of looting and destruction is a tragedy for Sudanese communities who were to benefit from substantial amounts of equipment and supplies donated by United Nations assets for civilian purposes. We remain hopeful that the Sudanese authorities can put an end to the looting in El Fasher and that the remaining infrastructure, equipment and assets can be administered for civilian purposes as planned.
