Teacher wants learning games for her first graders

SUMMERVILLE, SC (WCSC) — Dianne Lewis, a first-grade teacher at Beech Hill Elementary, says her young learners are excited about all the subjects she teaches.

She says that to keep her students’ attention, she likes to give them lots of playtime while learning by providing classroom games to motivate and challenge them.

Lewis says that for most of her students, this school year has been their first taste of being in the classroom during the pandemic.

She says what better way to engage her children than to give them games to play with small groups that they can lead on their own.

The games help her students practice their reading skills and help them focus on reading strategies, she says.

“It gives some kids an opportunity to be a leader and some kids an opportunity to explain their thinking to another kid and sometimes they learn more from each other than from me,” says Lewis.

For his Donors Choose project, Lewis requests games from an educational company that focus on vocabulary, phonetic skills and reading comprehension.

She says many of the games are self-correcting, allowing students to build ownership and foster collaboration and cooperation.

“We have a lot of school ahead and time to grow, so I have a lot of things I want to do with them, and these resources are going to help me,” Lewis says.

Lewis says that in her years as a teacher, she realized that there is as much learning with play as there is with work.

His Donors Choose project titled “Get Your Play On” still has $501 to fully fund.
